CRC NPS Rnd 1 Rugog Farm, Wales
Rugog Roundup...
Last weekend saw the first round of the 06 CRC NPS series being help on a brand new and untried course in Upper Corris, Wales. Featuring a fast and windswept top section the race start offered spectacular views for those with time to enjoy them, for the riders however numerous cambers and turns awaited, along with the odd very tricky drop off the numerous rocky outcrops and an almost impossible chute towards the bottom section of the course. Some lines became almost impossible to hit as the weekend progressed.
Though the event suffered some teething problems on the organisation front; Rugog saw a good weekend’s racing, despite the effects of the bad weather. Whilst not naturally technical the rain and the hundreds of riders left the already boggy course severely rutted, muddy and slippy and a real test of rider’s skills. It proved to be a real challenge just to stay on and within the tape let alone post a fast time. Riders were sliding everywhere and most people ended up crashing out more than once over the weekend. Even the Elites were finding this a real challenge. The course was almost constantly changing and being re-taped over the weekend as some lines became too dangerous to ride.
Team riders Jo Smith and Matt Simmons ripped up the hill and gave Ancillotti a presence on the podium both posting very fast times. Jo came in first spot in the super competitive Youth category taking the win by eight seconds over Sam Dale, and Matt took second in Elite aboard a borrowed bike coming in between Gee Atherton in first and Marc Beaumont in third; a fantastic result. Rich Thomas put in a good ride to take sixth in Junior only a few seconds off the top five, and Fergus Lamb rode hard despite the conditions to take twenty-sixth in Expert.
Well done to all the guys for a brilliant weekends racing, here’s looking forward to the next race in the series at Innerleithen.
